Video caching

video cachingIn recent years the volume of video data served over protocols like RTSP has fallen.  It has been replaced by delivery of flash video over HTTP.

Video sharing sites like Google Video, YouTube, MySpace, MetaCafe and DailyMotion all use this method, as do many broadcasters like the BBC, CNN etc.

The problem
Almost all the major media sites distribute their flash files internationally, using more than one server, over a content delivery network (CDN). This lets you see content quickly and more reliably but it means that you could be viewing an online video from a server in London while a friend in the same building views it via a server in Berlin.

For example, you’re looking at:

http://london-23.example.com/398jkl345nmsdf3/

but your friend is looking at:

http://berlin-45.example.com/398jkl345nmsdf3/

The file is the same but the URL is completely different.

A traditional caching server would think you were viewing different files because it stored content based on the full URL. Not only would you be filling up your storage with duplicate copies of the same video but you’d also be using up your bandwidth to download the same material.

The cost effective solution
CACHEBOX solves the problem with custom video caching extensions especially for CDNs. It locates and serves files from its cache, based on the file name rather than the full URL, for internet video sites. CACHEBOX dramatically improves your online video caching as well as caching for other large files like software updates.

Video caching will save you bandwidth, allow your users to access files quicker and increase their satisfaction with the service you provide.
