Using CompactFlash gives you a faster, more reliable appliance

CACHEBOX uses industrial CompactFlash cards, guaranteed by the manufacturer not to fail in 100 years of constant use, for the operating system (OS) and settings.

The operating system has a small footprint (currently less than 128MB) which, once booted can run purely from RAM, making it extremely fast.  It’s made even faster by performing a lot less read/write cycles - only writing to flash when changes are made.

Hard disks and fans are well known in the computing world to be the greatest risk of failure in any server. However, if a hard disk fails in CACHEBOX switching cards to a spare chassis gets you up and running with an identical system within minutes.  What’s more, when the hard disks have been replaced, booting up from the CompactFlash cards will automatically format and prepare the disk for use without you having to do anything else.

You also have better protection in the case of an unexpected power outage. CompactFlash cards massively reduce the risk of configuration and application data being corrupted.
