Windows Server dismissed from DHCP duty

ApplianSys is pleased to announce that the US Federal Probation Office of New Jersey has chosen DNSBOX to simplify DHCP management and eliminate server overhead.

The US Federal Probation Office of New Jersey, a state-wide agency responsible for supervising federal offenders across multiple sites, has deployed DNSBOX to replace ageing Windows servers and remove single points of failure in its DHCP setup.

Like many government agencies, the Probation Office faced challenges managing DHCP across remote locations. The system relied on end-of-life Windows servers and local routers, with no redundancy. Whenever there was a failure, Systems Manager Ed Buonocore had to travel up to 90 minutes to restore access.

By introducing DNSBOX, the agency has gained a dedicated DHCP solution with reliable failover and no need for ongoing software licenses. For example, Ed deployed two DNSBOX units in a high-availability pair at the main site, enabling uninterrupted service and easier management.

“The interface is great, it’s simple to set up and works as advertised. It’s an amazing DHCP server, with fully functioning failover and all the reporting I need,” said Ed Buonocore, Systems Manager. “I’ve always wanted to get rid of my Windows server – DNSBOX helped me achieve that.”

The change means the Probation Office can now modernise its network, reduce site visits, and maintain reliable DHCP at all locations. Ed plans to extend the deployment with three additional DNSBOX pairs across the agency’s remaining sites. The decision reflects a broader shift among public sector organisations toward simpler, more reliable solutions for core network services.
