Sweeter web access for Hamilton

ApplianSys is pleased to announce that Hamilton Unified, a school district in rural California USA, has chosen CACHEBOX to guarantee speedy content delivery for its ambitious e-learning schemes.

Hamilton has set bold online learning goals for its 700+ users, despite the higher cost of connectivity in its rural location. The district spends over US$7,000 every month to maintain a high-speed 1Gbps internet link to handle traffic from Windows and Chromebook devices.

However, teachers were reporting slow access to learning content in the classroom. High demand for online curricula meant hundreds of students were connecting at the same time, congesting the network. Combined with latency from slow servers upstream, especially bandwidth-hungry HTTPS websites like YouTube, some content was proving too slow for lesson use.

Director of Technology Frank James knew that plans to expand device numbers and add a BYOD network for up to 1,200 users would only compound the problem, but more bandwidth was just too costly. He knew caching should help – but previous experience with a Pala Alto solution had suggested YouTube was uncacheable, so Frank had low expectations.

CACHEBOX soon changed his mind. Designed to cache all the content schools need it incorporates highly specialised HTTPS caching functionality. With its onboard Media Library, online content such as YouTube can be pre-selected and cached for sharing directly with students – all without using precious bandwidth.

“By serving the majority of HTTP and HTTPS content locally, Hamilton will eliminate congestion and accelerate content in the classroom,” says CACHEBOX Consultant Sergio Villegas. “External internet factors simply won’t come into play, so content will be free to arrive at much faster LAN speeds.”
