East Orange squeezes more from DNS and DHCP

ApplianSys is pleased to announce that East Orange School District has chosen DNSBOX to simplify DNS and DHCP management while improving security and performance across its network.

East Orange School District, a public school system in New Jersey serving over 10,000 devices across multiple campuses, has deployed DNSBOX300 and DNSBOX200 appliances to replace its legacy Microsoft-based DNS and DHCP setup.

Like many school districts, East Orange faced growing challenges with security and control. Its internal DNS and DHCP were increasingly hard to manage on Windows Server, while outsourced external DNS meant even simple record changes could take a week.

By introducing DNSBOX, the district has brought both internal and external DNS fully in-house and moved to a purpose-built appliance platform for DHCP. Now it benefits from fast, secure DNS updates and reliable local DHCP services across all sites. The DNSBOX300 acts as a secure “hidden master”, managing all records from behind a firewall, while DNSBOX200s serve DNS and DHCP locally, reducing exposure to cyber threats and ensuring continuous service.

The move away from Windows Server has also eliminated unnecessary complexity. DNSBOX’s hardened OS, sandboxed services, and appliance-based format mean lower maintenance and greater resilience—with fewer moving parts and no excess services to manage.

The change means East Orange can now respond quickly to network changes, reduce risk, and operate a stable, secure DNS and DHCP service district wide.
