Challenge

To manage core IP services, UltraTech relied on DNS management tools built into Windows 2003 Server. However, with only Windows Firewall protecting their two internet facing servers, they were exposed to regular attack.

“We saw constant DDoS attacks on these servers,” recalls Robert Brown, Technical Lead at UltraTech. “At times our Internet connectivity was brought down due to the amount of traffic trying to hit the servers. It wasn’t uncommon for our site to lose Internet connectivity once a month because of an attack.”

Losing access to their websites was affecting customer satisfaction and with every attack diverting staff away from serving customers day-to-day requests, UltraTech’s reputation was just as exposed as their servers.

Solution

UltraTech purchased a DNSBOX master, with two slaves to serve external queries. The master was placed on the internal network behind a firewall and the two slaves in the DMZ.
