ApplianSys is pleased to announce that Nunavut Department of Education has purchased 25 CACHEBOX210s along with a Central Management Console to optimise school bandwidth and support the use of Pearson’s Equella Learning Object Repository (LOR).

With 32,000 people living in an area the size of Europe, Nunavut is one the most remote, sparsely populated regions in the world. This presents unique challenges for the provision of broadband to support online educational content in schools.

“Schools in 25 communities spread across the region share a satellite connection with just 16.4Mbps bandwidth,” explains CACHEBOX Sales Director Roger Clark. “More than 50% of Nunavut’s bandwidth was consumed by software updates, leaving inadequate capacity for Nunavut to access lesson plans and online educational content from Equella.”

Having experimented with in-house caching solutions, Nunavut wanted the benefit of a mature off-the-shelf product with comprehensive support and a simple, intuitive user interface. CACHEBOX was an ideal solution and ApplianSys developed custom Equella support including repository authentication tools to access content for each of Nunavut’s Equella subscribers.

ApplianSys partners Global Storm loaded Equella repository content (around 1TB) onto each CACHEBOX before deployment. Now Nunavut schools only need to use their internet connection to access updated content when it’s released by Equella.

Nunavut’s teachers now have high-speed access to Equella’s comprehensive library of content, where previously only 10% of content was accessible. With less repository content to access from the internet and CACHEBOX’s ability to cache software updates, more bandwidth is free to access educationally enriching content.

Nunavut Department of Education is based in Iqaluit, Canada.
