Bay County keeps updates at bay

ApplianSys is pleased to announce that Bay County School District has deployed CACHEBOX to take the strain of Chromebook updates off its network, and enabling updates to be applied far faster.

The district supports around 30,000 Chromebooks. Every time those devices need an operating system update, the same files are pulled across the district’s internet connection tens of thousands of times over.

The effect is twofold. Bandwidth spikes sharply during each update window, competing with everything else the network is being asked to do. And because the connection can only carry so much, the rollout itself drags: it has been taking over a month to get every device updated.

This is a traffic profile that caching handles extremely well. A single copy of each update file is stored locally and served to every subsequent device at LAN speed, so the update completes far faster and the internet connection is left free for classroom content.

The district has deployed a CACHEBOX440 to cover windows updates and extend caching to HTTPS traffic more generally.
