No cloud in UNFCCC forecast

ApplianSys is pleased to announce that the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change has deployed DNSBOX to deliver on-site DHCP and recursive DNS, with failover across its secretariat network.

The UNFCCC secretariat typically supports between 600 and 700 devices across 40 to 50 subnets. But that baseline changes sharply once a year when its annual conference adds thousands of devices to guest Wi-Fi.

Cloud-hosted DHCP was not an option. For an organisation whose network has to work regardless of what is happening upstream, core addressing services had to stay on site.

The network team also needed more than basic addressing: static host assignments for printers and other fixed equipment, DHCP Options wireless controllers and PXE clients.

The secretariat chose DNSBOX having evaluated other enterprise-grade DDI platforms, and put the product through a detailed technical review covering firmware upgrades, data restoration between vendors, hardware replacement, SNMP Management Information Bases (MIBs), lease data retention, failover and Microsoft integration.

Two DNSBOX210 appliances now run as a failover pair, providing DHCP and recursive DNS for the secretariat’s network.

About UNFCCC

The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change is the international treaty body that underpins global cooperation on climate change. Its secretariat supports the negotiations, tracks national reporting, and organises the annual conference of the parties, which brings delegations from almost every country in the world together in one place. Its network has to support a permanent staff estate year-round and absorb a large temporary influx once a year.
