ApplianSys is pleased to announce that Whittier City School District in California, a long-term user of CACHEBOX and DNSBOX, has chosen to extend its CACHEBOX fleet, deploying 6 more appliances across the district.

Thanks to the US federal E-Rate funding for caching solutions in US schools nationwide, Whittier first deployed a CACHEBOX420 in 2018. Director of Technology Manuel Plascencia had found Apple OS software updates for school-owned student devices were hogging the district’s 1Gbps internet link causing long wait times for classroom content and leaving students frustrated.

CACHEBOX changed all that. By serving software updates and other media-rich content locally, Whittier slashed internet traffic. Offloading content that would otherwise be downloaded by each device not only stopped congestion but enabled CACHEBOX-connected schools to deliver a premium learning experience.

A district strategy to offer a high-tech environment for enhanced learning and engagement has since seen all rooms equipped with Wi-Fi and Apple TVs and all 6,300 Whittier students in every grade gain access to iPads. So, in 2020, Manuel upgraded bandwidth to 10Gbps and deployed 5 CACHEBOX230’s in those schools with the largest increase in device numbers.

In May 2022, Manuel’s caching reports showed 55% of all school content was being served from cache, including normally uncacheable HTTPS content, which continues to account for more and more requests. Armed with these caching results, Manuel has now chosen to deploy a further 6 CACHEBOX230’s, this time in larger middle schools.

CACHEBOX scalability has kept pace with demand, ensuring wider availability of critical content to more and more Whittier students,” says CACHEBOX Consultant Alastair Scobbie. “More content, downloaded just once and served at lightning-fast LAN speeds, ensures no student need become disengaged.”
