CACHEBOX is Super for Mario

ApplianSys is pleased to announce that the American International School of Mozambique (AISM) has deployed CACHEBOX to boost internet capacity and better support 1 computer per student (1:1) learning in the classroom.

AISM is a dynamic school, one that prides itself on a fast pace of change. It recently introduced 1:1 learning to further its core value of ‘engaged self-learning’, equipping certain classes with iPads and Chromebooks. However, the resulting increase in traffic caused congestion – slowing internet access and impacting learning in the classrooms.

To tackle the congestion the school planned a bandwidth increase from 100Mbps to 150Mbps. But a plan to give higher grade students access to the internet on their own devices meant that demand would quickly rise back above the bandwidth supplied.

Network Lead Pedro Mario knew that adding Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) traffic would add to the congestion. But he feared more than just an increase in learning downloads. With device numbers set to soar, the surge in corresponding software updates was likely to overwhelm the new capacity. AISM faced internet access so slow there was a real risk e-learning would fail.

Recognising that caching could help offset the rising demand, Pedro contacted ApplianSys. Impressed by the sheer scope of content that CACHEBOX could handle, he quickly ordered a CACHEBOX230.

By storing and serving more of the content that matters to schools locally, from video to HTTPS content, from online testing to software updates from Apple, Microsoft and Google, CACHEBOX dramatically slashes how much bandwidth a school needs.

“In its first full month of operation, CACHEBOX offloaded 87% of AISM’s traffic, freeing up huge volumes of capacity for more content or extra users and their devices,” says Ilaria Mancinelli, CACHEBOX Consultant. “And, in serving content locally, classrooms benefit from lightning-fast LAN delivery – both Apple and Windows updates averaged 13 times faster than from the internet.”

About

Founded in Maputo in 1990, the American International School of Mozambique is an IB World School that follows the International Baccalaureate Learner and Diploma programmes. Offering a US-style college preparatory program that covers ELC through grade 12 it actively prepares students for universities worldwide. ‘Engaged learning’ initiatives encourage students to take personal initiative for gaining new knowledge – so it’s crucial the school’s 1:1 e-learning scheme delivers.
