CACHEBOX makes Varsity team

ApplianSys is pleased to announce that Varsity College, South Africa, has bought a CACHEBOX solution to help improve online learning for students.

The college comprises a total of 8 academic sites, each with its own internet connection. The largest one caters for ~1,600 users.

Recently, the college rolled out a 1:1 scheme to encourage independent learning. Senior Network Administrator at Varsity College, Cliff Eloff, was tasked with ensuring each site had enough bandwidth to support this.

However, following the launch of the scheme, bandwidth congestion led to slow browsing speeds throughout the network.

Despite plans for each site to be upgraded to a 100Mbps link, Cliff knew that this alone wouldn’t suffice as more devices joined the network.

With 1:1, the main challenge was dealing with the extra bandwidth congestion from software updates like Adobe, Apple and Microsoft. This was on top of YouTube traffic, which itself was very bandwidth-intensive.

Cliff sought a caching solution to handle the extra bandwidth demand from 1:1, and decided to pilot a CACHEBOX at one of the sites.

With 40% of traffic from software updates, he was very happy to see the bandwidth savings CACHEBOX delivered on these.
Following this Varsity College will deploy a CACHEBOX230 at each of the college sites, alongside the bandwidth upgrades.
