ApplianSys is pleased to announce that Maine School District 49 (MSAD) has bought a CACHEBOX solution to help speed up internet in the classroom and support its 1:1 pupil to iPad scheme.

Like many school districts in North America, MSAD uses interactive media tools as part of its curriculum.

MSAD Technical Engineer Michael Day knew that a caching solution would need to be implemented: “We have five buildings that share a 100 Mbps connection. We are attempting to be a 1:1 district and bought iPads for our students and teachers, but had to stop using them because when the students all got online to do their maths, our internet speed came to a crawl.”

This is familiar to ApplianSys Head of CACHEBOX Sales Roger Clark: “We’ve seen this problem at school districts across North America. Teachers find that internet-enabled learning is critical for engaging students, but most schools simply don’t have the bandwidth to handle it. Large file downloads and high traffic volume at the start of lessons eats up available bandwidth. This leads to painfully slow internet speeds, which wastes valuable lesson time.”

MSAD’s search for the perfect solution led it to deploy a CACHEBOX in each of its five school sites.  Since deployment, the district has saved an average of 25% bandwidth.

Michael was delighted: “Finally we could re-start our iPad scheme. I could never have imagined the difference would be that huge – this is something amazing and all schools need it.”

Roger responds: “I’m pleased that CACHEBOX has transformed this 1:1 scheme from a technical headache into the facilitator of independent learning that Maine SD knew it should be.”

Maine School Administrative District 49, USA, (http://www.msad49.org/District/) currently administers three elementary schools, one primary school, one junior high school and one high school, which are located in 4 neighbouring small towns (average population 3,000) in Maine’s Somerset County. MSAD is dedicated to providing a nurturing learning environment and instructional practices that support and encourage student achievement.
